talk talk cancellation fee?

I have been a talk talk customer for home phone and broadband since june 2006, I decided to switch to sky back in january who did everything for me and I now have no complaints with them, however my last talk talk bill has arrived and im £5.42 in credit but am being charged £78.64 cancellation fee! after almost 5years! Can anyone tell me if this is correct and if not would I be wise to cancel the direct debit and let them chase me for the money.

It appears that you are still in contract with them having started a new contract at some point-did you change tariff/package in the last 18m?
Cancel the DD by all means if you want your credit record trashed.

According to them I agreed over the phone to renew for 18 months in return for 2 months 1/2 price (july & august) but my bank statements show the average charge and talk talks online statements only go back to october. If I want printed versions there £2.50 and if I receive a bill in the post thats another £2.50. Im undecided weather to pay and complain or cancel the direct debit and see what happens.

So did you or did you not agree the 1/2 price deal that on the phone? I don't understand your comment about bank statements-those will show the exact amount taken each month-not an 'average'.
Just cancelling the DD will result in a trashed credit record and eventually calls from DCO's when they sell the debt on.

Julys dd was £24.24 and augusts was £23.54 which is average for the last 5 years. As for agreeing over the phone, its a possibility talk talk phone me twice a week on average with some offer or another one of the reasons for leaving them. It goes to show "a contract isn't worth the paper signed on" or over the phone.
