TV has mind of its own?

Im just wondering if anyone can tell me why sometimes my Tv does wierd things 
The TV is a few years old, second hand to me and have used it with Virgin since Ive had it. Ive two remotes, one for the TV and one for the Virgin box - the TV remote doesnt need to ever be used other than for the 'on' button and everything is controlled by the Virgin remote.
Sometimes when pressing a button like Tv Guide for example then the picture will go, either the screen will go black for ages, but still be sound, but then finally come back on with the guide opened. Or the picture will go to white noise and the TV's own channel will change to number 7 (as in number 1 is av, number 2 is virgin etc).
Is there something with my Virgin remote that is causing this or is it likely to be a fault with the TV?
