That's because Tony B (a baby boomer) told 50% of them to go to uni! ;)

They probably went as the only alternative was stacking shelves in Tesco now whose fault was that.

Apart from that being complete rubbish ( there are loads of alternatives), who's fault would you consider it to be?

    Age discrimination.

You simply cant sack those who you have employed for >20 years. It's too expensive.

Do you really think that the same opportunities are available for young people in the job market with just GCSEs as there was for young people with just O-Levels 30+ years ago?

Possibly a few less, but you did state that the ONLY alternative was shelf stacking.

As a boomer myself, I have to say that the friends of mine who are really well off tend to have their own businesses and are the ones that did not go to university.

There are still plenty of entrepreneurial types in the current generation. I'm talking about access to certain types of jobs, e.g. professions. There are also fewer jobs today than there were back then that don't require a high standard of education like manufacturing.

Obviously there are other jobs but then I don’t think all university students go to university because Mr Blair told them to. I left school in the sixties with 1 O level got an apprenticeship. In addition to the good training provided by the company I worked for they also funded in excess of 10 years further education that included day release. That was not that uncommon then, how many companies would do it now. In fact I would say the majority of the increase in people going to university are people who would have gone into jobs that required lower qualifications back then and would have been trained by the company.

As to whose fault I’m not sure but blaming the entire problem on the last Labour Government is in my view short-sighted the rot set in long before that.

Could there be any relevence to the fact that the majority of baby boomers started work 5 years earlier than many of the current generation of FTB wannabees?
