I don't think there is an age limit or any cost. Have you checked out their website? http://www.sja.org.uk/sja/default.aspx

ds is a cadet. He says he often sees new adult volunteers at events. I don't know about the cost but for children it is very reasonable, you are expected to volunteer for a certain number of hours per year (at least 50 for children) and attend meetings etc. Altogether a great thing to do.

The only cost involved when I did it was for uniform as far as I remember. It was a fair few years ago though. Perhaps it varies by group though.

There were adults and young people at our weekly meetings, the youngest were about 12, the oldest around 60 I would guess.

I think the number of hours you're expected to volunteer must vary by area because in our group there was about 30 of us and we only got to volunteer at 4/5 events per year each. We were never told we were expected to volunteer for X hours.

You can just do a course with them and not volunteer. The cost for this depends on the particular course - the basic one starts from £25 but you might not learn CPR with that or they go up to about £300 for a 3 day course covering everything ever and suitable for work

I've never volunteered for St. John's before, but it will probably be similar to the Red Cross in that there will be three types of courses: those for employees (paid for by their employers), those for Jo Public and those for people who are prepared to volunteer regularly for first aid duties.

If you commit to being a volunteer, the training tends to be much more involved and totally free. If however you want to do a course for your own interest, there tends to be a nominal charge, along with the cost of a first aid manual.

One option is to ask at work if any more first aiders are needed - if so, your employer will pay for you to learn first aid and chuck a few extra pounds in your payslip each month for being the go to person each time someone has an accident at work.

If you can't volunteer or be a first aider at work, give your local branch of St John's a call and ask when they are running courses next. Basic first aid courses for the general public tend to priced to cover overheads like hall rental - the first aid trainer tends to be a seasoned volunteer giving up their time. It won't be prohibitive for you to attend, that's for sure.

Do you only want to join to learn First Aid? Because that is not what SJA is about, it is about offering first aid at events, SJA in return gets donations for attending and that is how they run.

if you just want to learn First Aid your local college will have something in the evening you can do and SJA themselves run First Aid courses.
