Broadband connection keeps disconnecting

We recently moved house and changed our landline number but kept our broadband supplier and used the same equipment laptop (dell), netgear router (DG 834G) and same set up. Signall is fine but the connection decides to disconnect after 30 to 45 minutes.
Used various spyware but still keeps happening. The netgear router is about 2 and 1/2 years old. Not sure if it is this or the fact our telephone socket is near a radiator. If anyone has any suggestions, they would be very much appreciated as it is becoming very frustrating as I never had this problem before (also previous occupants never had a problem)

is it encrypted, is it the connection between the pc and router or the router than the internet that is dropping?
If it is a wireless issue, make sure it is encrypted, and use netstumbler to check if anyone else is on a nearby channel, you need to be 5 channels away from other people to maintain seperation.
If it is a connection to the isp issue, check that there are filters on every phone, and complain to the isp.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
To discount a problem with your internal phone wiring in your new house try connecting your modem directly into the BT test socket behind the master socket (if you have one that the lower portion of the faceplate can be removed) after removing connections to all phones. In my new house the previous owners installed internal extensions that were so close to power cables that these interfered with the broadband signal enough to cause problems so my modem is now in the dining room and all my upstairs sockets are dead! Mind you, I can only get 512k speed on my noisy line, so maybe it is just a bit sensitive.
Makes me miss the NTL I had in my last house really.
If the problem is not solved, and your equipment hasn't changed, then I'd say BT may need to have a look. They can change the "gain" and other "voodoo" settings on the line - but if the fault is not with them they will charge a fee for visiting your house so beware.Toffeeblock0 -
Is BT your Broadband supplier? I had a friend who started using them last week with a BT-supplied wireless router and suffered constant disconnection every 20-30 minutes. When we rang BT we were told that this could happen for the first 10 days of connection until it "settled down".
Just a thought.0 -
This happens to me all the time its SO annoying
My broadband provider is Tiscali0 -
Many thanks for the suggestions although not sure what Netstumbler is.
My supplier is Nildram, I never had a problem at our old house. I am still getting same problem on our Desktop computer upstairs in our spare bedroom. We did have BT technician come round and check line (inc call out charge!) and said there was no problem with ADSL line.0 -

Have you followed Nildram's advice on their website? My connection keeps dropping
- Check, and if possible, replace your micro-filters and internal cabling (even if the setup has worked before).
- Unplug all non ADSL equipment from the line including fax machines, Sky TV, etc (even if it has worked with them before).
- Try plugging your ADSL directly into the master socket via the filter with no other devices on the line. With some newer master socket installations you can remove the faceplate and connect via a test port found behind. This will bypass all internal wiring.

Many thanks for advice. Been on line from 9.30am till 3.00pm today then went off (which is alot longer that previous) and have not done anything yet! I have downloaded netstumbler but before I do anything else, I will see how tonight goes.
Looking at other threads I seem to be not the only one. Is this a common problem?0 -
Wireless is more commonplace than it used to be, and the more routers, the more the likelihood of interference, you can only have 3 routers in the area (on channels 1, 6, 11)without likelihood of interference. Even though there are 13 channels, they interfere with each other, a 5 channel seperation is a good idea. If the routers aren't encrypted, then people could play with your router and disconnect you.
It can also be nothing to do with wireless, and down to your isp/router/congestion/wiring/IE config/MTU
So the first thing to find out is if it is a wireless issue or not.

by pinging the router, pinging google, pinging googles by ip address, when it fails.

I've put another post here:

we used to have a problem like this, including noisy phone lines, but solved it with changing the master plate to one that BT use for their engineer installed installations. It is legit, and OK to change that plate under BT's T&C's.
