Hi all, I still haven't plucked up the courage to contact them on the phone but I have gone through the Debt Remedy section on their website & had an online chat with someone. They have sent me an information booklet saying that they recommend bankruptcy. I have a few questions tho:
1). I need my car for work. No car = no job. Will they make me sell the car?
2). I pay my dad rent money every month. Do I need to prove this? How can I do it? I really want to avoid my parents finding out.
3). I work different hours every week, anything between 24 & 37. What should I say my income is?
4). I would like to go to university next yr would I still be eligible for a student loan etc?
5). What should I do in the meantime? Contact the companies I have debts with? My payments are due out on the 1st & I won't have enough money. I have a loan with Halifax which I won't be able to pay. I have my wages paid into an account with the Halifax on 7th April will they take the money then?
6). What will happen to my mobile phone as this is a contract?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

I can't really help but I wish you all the best, you're doing the right thing, you're in the right place and these are the right people to help minimise and iron out any problems they can see from what you post about your situation.
Keep your head up, don't be ashamed of your mistakes as it's how you deal with them what really matters
I'm in around £5k total of debt and it feels like a hell of a lot, however, I'm not ashamed of it anymore, if people judge me on that then screw 'em

I'd go over to the bankruptcy board. There's guys over there that can give you answers from first hand experience.
Good luck with whatever you decide.0 -
I would open a new account, a basic one with the Co-op or Barclays. Halifax could very well take money from your wages to pay off your loan, and obviously that's the last thing you need!!!0

1). I need my car for work. No car = no job. Will they make me sell the car? It depends on the value, I think most OR's will accept anything up to around £1000, above that and they may ask for it to be sold and you to buy something cheaper
2). I pay my dad rent money every month. Do I need to prove this? How can I do it? I really want to avoid my parents finding out. do you do this by bank transfer or by drawing out the cash to give to them?, of course they will expect you will be paying rent to your parents, they will assess if the amount you pay is reasonable
3). I work different hours every week, anything between 24 & 37. What should I say my income is? if 24hrs is the minimum you work then I would base your income on that with anything above as overtime
4). I would like to go to university next yr would I still be eligible for a student loan etc? I don't know the answer to this, sorry
5). What should I do in the meantime? Contact the companies I have debts with? My payments are due out on the 1st & I won't have enough money. I have a loan with Halifax which I won't be able to pay. I have my wages paid into an account with the Halifax on 7th April will they take the money then?cancel your direct debits, set up a new bank account with Coop or barclays (if you have no debts with them), you need a basic account only, yes Halifax will take the money from your account to pay your loan this is called the 'right to offset'
6). What will happen to my mobile phone as this is a contract?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help. If you can afford this then there is no reason for this to continue, although I think in an SOA in BR, they would only allow reasonable costs for a phone, so if it's currently costing you £50 a month for instance, I don't think they would accept this

I've made a few comments above but I am no expert, currently in a similar situation to you but we are going down the IVA route as BR is not an option for my hubby due to his jobAug GC £63.23/£200, Total Savings £00 -
Thanks for all your replies guys!! no1 in the "real" world knows about my debt & I love coming on here and knowing that I'm not alone. milliemonster - What does your husband work as? I would like to be a social worker in the future, bankruptcy wouldn't affect this would it?

It's not immeadiately springing to mind as an occupation where there could be problem - usually it's things like being a councillor, finance jobs - ie accountant, lawyers - that sort of thing.
Can you call up the uni - if it's a social work course and ask them? Is there a social workers register/association? - you could anonymously phone and ask them.
Perhaps those on the bankruptcy board can shed further light on some things as well?
best of luck

Laura,
You've let a month slip by since you last promised to 'definitely contact a debt charity'.
The only person you are hurting by delaying is yourself - another month of stress and worry.
Your creditors couldn't care less about you one way or the other, which is good because you can afford to be selfish and do what's right for yourself.
No one is saying sorting out your mess is going to be fun, but I'm prepared to bet it won't be as bad as you think.0 -

Check with the GSCC that you would still be eligibleto register - I cannot see any reason why not but there is a requirement that you conduct your personal business in a exemplary manner (or something like that) to remain registered and be able to practice.Mama read so much about the dangers of drinking alcohol and eating chocolate that she immediately gave up reading.0
