Just a quick note. If one of our adult children came to us and said "look, I'm in debt, but I've learned from it and am working through it sensibly" then we would be supportive of that. People make mistakes - we don't expect our children to be perfect. Don't you think as long as you explained that you were working through it and had learned from it that your parents would be supportive of you? After all, that's quite different from coming to them and expecting them to bail you out.

Have to say im a little annoyed, youve built up this debt, need to sort yourself out preferably by paying it off but not by bankruptcy. Your at home with no dependents, which means you could work all hours with only yourself really to please, to help pay off these debts. University seems a good goal perhaps, you could give yourself 3 years to pay off debts and build up some savings to get you through university. Surely you have something to show for this money apart from the car.

I have worked, scrimped and saved all the time to keep roof over heads of family and keep a good life for kids, even though we dont get holidays very often, days out are mostly budgeted for and all on a very small budget, so it can be done.

I hope you get sorted, but if people/family find out maybe thats a good thing.
  • Hi there, with regards to your phone contract as long as your 6-9 months into your contract (dependent on the network) you can lower your tariff to the next one down. This may only be £5 but every little helps. I was also recently in your situation with Santander overdraft fees. I went in and spoke to them and they had me on the worst possible one for charges. They changed my account to one where i have to pay £10 a month account fee, which includes free holiday insurance, breakdown cover etc however it also means that my overdraft charges have come down from £34 to £7.50 maximum per month! So thats an additional £16.50 just from that which works out at £198 a year. Also do you have to drive everywhere or are there some places that you can walk to, to save on petrol. Does anyone from work live near you, so you can car share and one week they drive and one week you drive, to halve your petrol cost?
  • I have to say i felt rather uncomfortable reading the quote below!

I'm not really sure its anyone on here's place to judge. We're all here because we're in debt none of us are perfect. I'm in debt whilst living at home and believe me tried working all the hours God sends and ending up burning myself out completely and making myself really ill. Yes hindsight is a wonderful thing but there is no point looking back and saying i should of or if only, what matters is what your doing about it now.
  • Thanks everyone for your comments!

NeverAgain - I know I'm only hurting myself, just needed to get some things straight in my head before I let anyone know. It's one thing coming on here and talking about the debt I have but actually saying the words out loud is totally different. I am the worlds best procrastinator at the best of times!!!
Gizmo111 - Thanks I contact SSSC (Scotlands GSCC) and they advised there would be no issue with this
Triggles - I really wish I could speak to my parents but they are very old-fashioned about things like this and my dad would be absoultely mortified. My older brother got into debt a couple of years ago and my dad kicked him out. (They have the same name though and think it caused my dad alot of problems getting credit etc) so unfortunately for me this is a major no no.
Saterkey - Sorry to have annoyed you, however you have absolutely no idea about what has gone on in my life and the reason I have built up this debt. I would preferably like to pay it all back as I have spent it but that just may not be possible. I really hope that you meant your post to be helpful however all it has done is made me feel even worse about the situation I am in. I appreciate I got myself into this mess and I don't need anyone making me feel more ashamed than I already do!
Chatterbox25 - I've only recently started my contract so can't lower it at the moment. I have cancelled a few things that I had such as gym membership, insurance policies etc. Unfortunately I work on my own alot so can't car share but we do try to share it out when we work together. (Thanks for sticking up for me as well! x)

So it wasn't that bad! I contacted CCCS this morning and gave a few details. Someones going to call me back at 9.30 tomorrow to go over things abit further. The woman was really nice, she is the first "real" person I have discussed this with. I feel worse now its out in the open but will hopefully feel better tomorrow when I've had a chat with someone. I also called the co-op bank who are opening a cashminder account for me. As soon as I get the details through I will change my salary etc to go into that account.

I know this is only the beginning of the journey and I understand it will be hard but I'm glad I've taken the first step.

Well done, I'm sure you will feel better tomorrow.

Good luck and let us know how you get on x
  • Morning, a lady from CCCS called me this morning and went through my budget with me. She has sent me a booklet with different solutions. The first is a temporary arrangement plan where I would contact each creditor and offer £x per month. Second option is LILA bankruptcy.

I feel even more confused now and don't know where to turn now. I just don't know what to do for the best, I don't even know why I'm writing this, I thought it would make me feel better but my head is even more messed up now :(

Go over to the Bankcruptcy board. The people on there are so knowledgeable and helpful. I had alot of help and support from them and also just by reading the advice that was given to other people.
Good luck you are doing the right thing by starting to take control and deal with this problem.
