How to cancel my new Talktalk contract?

Hi,

It’s my first post in this forum.

I used to have for many years tiscali and never had a problem.
I have received a phone call end of February 2011 from talktalk saying that tiscali has joined talktalk and if I would like to upgrade my package. I have received an offer from them which is around £19/month incl. line rental, phone calls and 24megabit broadband.
On 2nd of march 2011 my new package went active.
My problems with them starts now.

  • I’m moving house in a few weeks and would like to take my phone number with me, but talktalk say that they can’t do it I will have to take a new. ( When I signed up I was told of course you can transfer your number).
  • Since the 2nd march I have no caller ID. I have contacted talktalk many time but everytime the same, please allow us 24 hours then it should work.
  • I’m paying for 24megabit and I’m only getting not even 5 megabit. I’m sure that my line can do more than that.
  • I have asked talktalk last week, how long do I have to cancel the contract for free, they said 14 days. I have checked online today at talktalk.co.uk/legal/30-day-trial/ and it says that new customers can cancel within 30 days. I called them up and they have checked my account and yes I can cancel it till end of the month (March). I have called them up a few minutes later again to ask them to send me a written confirmation about it, and they said no you have only 14 days.

I’m giving up with them. We are living in 2011 and not even my caller id is working.

Now I need your help, how can I cancel talktalk for free, or what should I do?

Many thanks

To be fair to TT (and this galls me) you were committed to a minimum term when you agreed to their service. This begs the question why did you agree to a new service and the inevitable lock-in if you were planning to move in such a short time period?

If you had no knowledge of the impending move, then it simply becomes an expense of moving in much the same way as closing down any other service. you can make yourself ill looking for justification to cancel, but as a transfeeing Tiscali > TT customer, they've previously rejected a 14 day cancellation period as the customer wasn't new, but an 'upgrader'. Similarly, the 14 days evaporates if the service is actually provided. Ther 24Mb service has always been 'up to' - and is variable depending on loadings at your exchange.

If you are moving, the only way to mitigate the cancellation is normally to seek reconnection at oyur new address. Without this, you'll be hit with the full amount - around £5pm for phone line, plus £15pm for BB.

Before I have signed up I did ask them about the moving, and they said “it’s no problem everything will stay the same incl. phone number”. I would never agree to a new contract if I would know that I can’t transfer my number.

My neighbours not talktalk customers receive 10Mbit.

Are you moving so far away that the number transfer is impractical? You wouldn't expect to take your number from an address in, say, Nottingham to an address in Plymouth, for example. The same applies to more localised districts if you are moving to an area served by a different exchange.

The download speed that you receive is not solely dependent upon the ISP or the line to your house. The set-up of your computer and/or the wifi system has a bearing on it as well.

You could always port the number to a voip provider, that way you can take it anywhere with you. You would just need to set up voip once you have broadband up and running at the new address. I dont know whether you will have to pay any disconnection fees if you take their service at the new address.
