Internet

Hello i am wanting to try and get out of debt and any chance of any extra money helps, at the moment i use bt for phone line and orange for internet, pay bt 12.99 per month and orange 9.99 per month, i am moving next month so not sure if i would be best to carry on at new place with thease or if would be cheaper to cancel them as there well passed the 18 month contract and maybe get a internet without phoneline if would be cheaper or not and if so who with??

Comments

  • i pay £24.99 with bt thats my line my internet and the full vision TV package quite cheap as i was paying £45 before
  • yea so its just bit like what i paying now, think might be best juust to keep what i have, its just i herd about thease internets where you dont need a phone line so wont sure, also i never use my phoneline but use the internet lot!
  • I would also be intrested in this,
I get my broadband free (or at least as part of a £25/pm contract) from orange.

I never use my landline whatsoever but obviously still have to have the bt line there to get the internet over.
So, although I get 'free' broadband I have to pay BT £14 p/m just for the standing charge.

If I dropped the broadband from the orange package I could change to a £22 p/m tariff so, to sum up, who can provide both unlimated broadband and line rental for under £17p/m?
  • i herd that virgin do i broardband thats just broardband and you dont need a phoneline as it works as cable, i dont really want phoneline or tv or anything like that just basically broardband!

Would depend if you are in a covered area of which most are not unless you are in a big town or city.
Were with Talk talk purely because they are the only providor with the LLU thingy(whatever that is, its just lots faster than the other providor round here). Think its about £21 all in, shocking customer service but fast and reliable connection. I think the majority are going to be coming in at similar amount. You might find you can haggle a better deal with your current providers if you threaten to leave.

You need a phone line unless you get the broadband provided through a wireless dongle... some other providers like Virgin might provide you with a BB only service but it's a VERY small amount of areas that this would be applied to and I'll admit I've never come across the phenomenon before... Not to say it doesn't exist...
So... you need to pay SOMEONE for your line rental - be that BT or Talktalk or someone else - you CAN have the line rental but not have a phone package which would give you reduced calls etc etc. Then on top of that you pay for BB to be provided on that line - it can be by the same company you pay the line rental to or not - up to you.
I have no problem admitting I work for Talktalk Business - I have nothing to do with the consumer side :) - and I wouldn't use us as a consumer... But if money is very tight then yes... we're competitive and you just have to hope you don't need to call tech support I'm afraid :)

BCJ - the "LLU thingy" is a piece of kit in the local exchange that TT have put in there in rented space from BT. It's usually a lot faster than both IPstream and DataStream (although this is being phased out now...) - I won't bore you with the technical ooomph but it basically means we're the only ones who were willing to make an investment in that exchange as it's obviously not blessed with lots of subscribers to make it a very financially beneficial investment for ISPs to put thousands and thousands of pounds into installing their own LLU equipment :)

I had the cable broadband when I lived in zone 6 West London that was installed by Virgin predecessor (they were bought by one company, then Virgin bought it all), however when I moved into more dense area and wanted to get the same cable broadband from Virgin they told me I could only get it with the phone line. What was the point?
Very much depends on where you live, give it a try and see.
  • yea thought that, i herd that u can also get say incoming calls only which is very cheap but not sure if the broardband will work as its not outoing!, will maybe call and say i dotn want any calls just basacally the phoneline for my internet only!
