Visa Credit Card Debt

I took out a co-op credit card about 10 yrs ago, after about Two years the co-op banks closed leaving me know where to pay the debt. As i was leaving the country I tried to pay the account off over the phone and was told that I could not pay it. I waited several months for a Visa bill to land on the mat, which never happened.
I have been out of the country now for Seven years and I am now recieving letters from[ EQUIDEBT demanding payment to repair my Credit file. ps. I am also getting Text and phone calls everyday, so far I have chosen to ignore them, am I correct in doing so? or can they take it further if I do not respond to them. Your advise would be appreciated.

Are you back in the UK now? Where are these letters being sent to? You will have completely destroyed your credit file in the UK and the only action you can take to repair it is to pay what you owe.

Nobody here is going to tell you that you are correct to ignore your responsibilities. Sorry.

If you have not paid towards, or acknowledged responsibility for, the debt, in 6+ years, then it is statute barred and cannot legally be collected upon - unless they have a CCJ against you.

If it has been 7+ years since you last paid towards it then the account will have in all probably fallen into default and the default fallen off your credit file (they remain for six years).

I would suggest obtaining a copy of your credit file (this does not alert creditors to your whereabouts etc) to see if you have a default and / or CCJ pertaining to that debt.

If you don't, fine. If you have a Default, then you will have great difficulty passing all but the lax credit checks until six years after the Default Date. If you have a CCJ, then Co-Op and anyone working on their behalf to collect the debt will be entitled to chase you and demand payment for ever.

    Good luck :o
