How Much Deposit for Conservatory??

We've had a good quote for a conservatory but I'm wondering what the norm is with regard to deposits?

This company is asking for 40% upfront then when the base is done another 40% then the remaining 20% at the end.

I'm loathe to pay that sort of money without any work being done, but is this what most companies would charge?

Think this company had money problems last year so could be struggling getting credit from suppliers but it makes me worry that my deposit would be spent elsewhere, then if someone else doesn't pay him we're stuffed!

Any advice?

Thanks

Ask to pay the deposit on a credit card, failing that a Visa debit card.

We were thinking of asking if we could do that, not sure if he has the facility to take cc payments so I'll have to check.

If anything did happen I would get that money back then no problem?

We had a conservatory fitted last year, we paid 10% deposit and the balance on completion of the work to our satisfaction, and that was a small independent company with a good reputation.

Have you asked them if they are subcontracting some of the work? eg. the 40% you pay after the base is complete ends up being split between them and the bricky they've got in to do the work?

I paid 10% deposit for mine, and the remainder a couple of weeks after completion - all done by the same local company.
