To be honest, if you travel anytime after around the 8th of December, all the airline prices a sky high (no pun intended!)

As you can appreciate, this is peak time. I doubt you will get much change from a grand. But I am mistaken sometimes - never wrong, just mistaken !!!

Hate to say it (being a Travel Consultant) , but your best bet is to avoid us agents and search the net, for that time of year. I booked some clients to Melbourne last week departing 23/12 with Emirates - £1320 pp, and believe it or not that was the cheapest we had.

Maybe someone else knows a good site for Oz flights ?
:D I am in the future you know...
...9 hours ahead to be exact !:D

Lots of Ashes package trips going over for the Melbourne and Sydney Tests starting on 26th Dec and 2nd Jan. You'll do well to get anything reasonable. The cheap flights for these dates went last February.
  • Best fares seem to be in the £1250 region (ouch)

You can get this down a bit by buying two (or more) separate tickets. UK-Australia is a popular route, especially at Christmas but splitting it up a bit can help. I have not got time to trawl all the options for you but here are a few examples:

    Swiss LHR-GVA-HKG-GVA-LHR 24/12/06-02/01/07 £450

    Virgin HKG-SYD-HKG 24/12/06-02/01/07 £470

    TOTAL LON-SYD-LON = £920.

Not that convenient but doable. There are going to be better deals than this, try looking at business destinations that have lots of flights but not so many people traveling home for the holidays. Southeast Asia and middle east are probably the best bet (BKK/BAH/DOH/DBX/SIN/NRT/HKG/KUL/). Routing through the USA is possible but xmas related prices will affect this option.

Another possible option: Last year one of the larger UK tour operators ran weekly charter flights to PER, But I cannot remember who and can't find anything about it but did not have time to look properly. Maybe worth investigating.
