IN YOUR OPINION

Is it really necessary for me to prefix every sentence with 'In my opinion'?
Said Aristippus, “If you would learn to be subservient to the king you would not have to live on lentils.”
Said Diogenes, “Learn to live on lentils and you will not have to be subservient to the king.”

Yes if its the preface to;

-''The majority you're referring to are essentially people living on the edge of a knife with hardly any savings to dip into''

''It's simply the most rational way''

''Emotionally going for the car is a decent choice. It'll all be good fun, then you'll be a bit miffed in a few years when your deposit just doesn't stretch far enough...''

The only opinion there is 'hardly any'. The average savings is something like £7k, not much to tide you over if you're made unemployed. Even less for youth. Not to mention some of that will go towards a house deposit, or moving in costs if you rent, appliances, general life costs.
It's simply the most rational way
Emotionally going for the car is a decent choice.
rational: "proceeding or derived from reason or based on reasoning"
emotional: "actuated, effected, or determined by emotion rather than reason"

Can we not do better than a debate over semantics?

its your opinion that people are on a knife edge - 7k savings is living on the knife edge?

its you arguing over the semantics - i'm aware of the meaning, your flummoxed as to why i called you out on it and your last reply only serves as the answer - ''rational: "proceeding or derived from reason or based on reasoning" - this would be your reasoning not necessarily that of someone else.

and its in your opinion that someone would think or act a certain way at certain points it time.

I agree its a waste of time, as I've said you don't get the other side, others do and it works for them.

I'll agree to disagree with you Edgey.

I'm confident from the OP's initial post that he's got the sense to figure out what's best for him and wish him well with whatever he decides.

...If it is the car mate, enjoy it, pay your bills and don't worry about it - only you'll know if you did the right thing.

I don't think the OP gives a hoot what anyone is saying now, he's probably gone off and bought the car because he's sick of all the debate and not getting the answers to the questions he actually asked!

He's probably driving around happy as larry as we type, enjoying his new aquisition and his life whilst everyone on here is fretting about it! lol

I really hope he ressurects this thread in 3 years time and tells what a wonderful time his car has given him.

I'm assuming the OP is a he but I reckon, given the insurance quote he could be she.

OP, whatever you decide, I hope you enjoy your life.
