Hi, I don`t know if anyone can help me on this, but here goes. I received an email, allegedly from H.M.R.C., informing me i am due a refund. The attachment has asked me for sensitive information, address, bank details etc, so the money can be transfered. I haven`t heard of them doing refunds this way, is this ligitimate?

As above, it is a scam as HMRC never issue refunds by email.

think about this: have you gave the hmrc your email address?
do you think they would send an electronic email to actually ask you for this information?! NO NO NO NO

google in future - it will save you alot of 'worry'

I got one too ...laughed and deleted.

I got a refund of £1207, for a three year period, 2007/08, 2008/09 and 2009/10 in January, a lovely surprise because I hadnt asked for it. The money was very useful..... then last month I got a letter saying they had got it wrong and hadnt charged enough tax for two of the years and it should only have been for £400.00, so they have changed my tax code for next year to reclaim the outstanding £800.00

Since I didnt ask for it in the first place and have no idea how they work it all out, I am very disappointed.... anything I can do????

Get your P60s out .... get the P800s out - and compare them. It's really not that difficult, if you sit down with them and a cup of coffee for half an hour.

If you're stuck then post the figures on here .... but you forfeit the coffee. ;)

I've never heard of them counterclaiming on a P800 figure if it's HMRC initiated. They should have sought your 'agreement' to recover the erroneous overpayment - did the letter do that? There'a a possibility of asking they reconsider under the guise of 'official error'. But the timeframes are against you for that - as they got back to you before a full (tax) year had passed.

Did you receive a letter with a calculation of how they came to the conclusion you were due a refund of £870? Did you check the figures on that calculation?

If sending out the cheque was a genuine mistake then they are entitled to ask for it back...
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)
  • I didnt check figures, brain just tripped to rebate lol
but all of my work collegues got this too same thing letter cheque then letter asking for it back , seems odd to me
  • have checked with tax office rebate is wrong, but can either keep it and change tax code next year to pay it back , or just return it , wot to do lol

And did they say why it was wrong? Is it something you claimed - or was it HMRC initiated?
