Basic Acc - No Security Number - Limitation?

I recently have opened a basic account with Santander, and I was told I would still be able to create standing orders and draw out cash as with any account.
So today I was trying to sign up for Phone & Broadband with BT. However after filling in their online forms, I was confronted with Direct Debit detail queries. Fine, I thought. until it asked me for a Security Code. My card does not have one.
Am I unable to set up this sort of payment method online with BT, using this type of account? Will I be able to buy ANYTHING online? As if memory serves, they all ask for these details.

By security code, do you mean the 3 digit number on the back of your Cashpoint card by the signature strip? Thats the only thing I can think of that you might be referring too?Opinions are like bottoms - We all have one, just some stink more than others

You seem to be confusing direct debit and paying by debit card. You don't need the security number for direct debit, only for debit card payments. Your account is not a debit card so can't be used at point of sale.0

direct debit should just ask for sort code, account number and sometimes name of bank/branch etc..
security code (cvc2) is for debit card transactions only0 -
Ok, thanks for clearing this up.
I have spoken to my Mum, however, and she says she payed hers over the phone, and they didn't even ask for the card details - just the account details.
So Im going to just ring them tomorrow instead.0 -
It is safer to use direct debit.
Mistakes happen on a regular basis with utility and phone companies so take care.0
