Tetley 'Try me Free' offer catch

I bought a Tetley green tea box because it had a flash on the side saying try free. I assumed it would be the usual case of sending off the till receipt to get a refund.
I was wrong . They require you to provide your bank details to them so they can credit your bank account direct with £1.79. I have complained but they say a bank payment is the only way they will refund the purchase price.
I am afriad I am not prepared to give my bank deatils to any website for the megre reward of £1.79.
I feel I was taken in by this promotion.

Whats the problem with giving them your bank details?
Don`t you give your bank details out every time you use a cheque or set up a DD?On the internet you can be anything you want. It`s strange so many people choose to be rude and stupid.0 -
hi i picked up a pack without the offer by mistake, so if you arent using yours do you mind pming me yours. I no im being cheeky but the tea wasnt very nice anyway.

I think thats even better than sending you a cheque or a voucher, bank details, money in your account and Done!0

That's much better than a cheque.. Nice!0

In such cases, can you give them details of a little used savings account instead?
It should still accept transfers in, but nobody would be able to transfer money out or take any other payment as it won't accept DD's etc.0 -

its not a catch is it, only thing that can be done with your bank details is pay the money in, no money can be taken out since the login details are unknown to tetley,
what do you think will happen0 -

Actually if you are in possession of someone's bank details - just account no and sort code will do - you can take money out of someone's account.
Jeremy Clarkson once took the same dismissive attitude regarding bank details, revealed them in an article published in the Sunday Times, and lost £500. Granted some charity was the beneficiary of the £500 - but it did prove the point.0 -
Clarkson gave out his current a/c details (the *coughs* muppet!).
Like I said, if you only give the details of a savings account then if someone tried to set up a DD it would be rejected by the bank as savings accounts don't generally support direct debits, overdrafts etc.0 -

Good point. But then again, I wasn't actually responding to your post was I? The Lord protect us from muppets who view the MSE forum simply as a vehicle for fatuous point scoring.

Fair enough I'd say. I'd be a bit leery about handing out my bank details to all and sundry as well. On the other hand Tetley is owned by Tata, which is a pretty big and respectable company, so I think you should be safe enough.0 -
Think of the money Tetley will save in P&P that would be spent refunding by cheque.
