store card or credit card which is easier ?

hi, would like to know people's experience on which is easier to gain a store card or credit card, i'm at the beginning of trying to build up a decent credit rating and at the moment have no debt,no credit cards,loans etc but this in turn means as i'm very well aware i have no credit history and would like to know best way to start many thanks

  • best way to start is by asking your own bank who have a history of how you manage your finances, to give you a credit card.

    if they do it means you dont have to go down the subprime path, i.e. the easier to get first time cards with huge APR, capital one, aqua, vanquis...

    It bears repeating that a huge APR is irrelevant for someone who is using the card to build a credit history, provided they pay off the whole balance each month.

    I haven't had a store card for many years. I think the last was from Brantano to take advantage of a 10% discount offer.

    My gut feeling is that, on average, a store card would be easier on the assumption that
    • The store would like to persuade you to spend money there and then.
    • Credit limits tend to be lower with store cards.
    I'm no expert on the subject, though!
