Warning: HSBC Self-Service Coin Collect

Hi

Just to warn you all, if you use the service above make sure you actually know how much you are paying in before you use the machine. Ok it does defeat the object of just walking in and paying in a jar full of change.

Today it took 4 attempts to get the machine to pay in the cash. Each time it neither rejected nor accepted the coins, it held them inside the machine. In the end I resorted to jaming in my fingers into the slot near the feeder tray and shaking the hole to free the loose coins. In the end I had shook £1.21 free.

I am 99% positive it was all mine (I had basically fed in a pocket full of loose coins without giving it a second thought), but even then if some of it was not mine, then the machine is bascially short changing HSBC customers. Ok only a small amount at stake, but its the principle of the matter.

I was going to complain in branch, but i guess they would have asked straight away how much had i paid and how much was I missing. Beware unless you are happy to give the world's local bank a slice of your readies...

Next time all loose change will be going into ASDA self-scan where i can see it count up as i feed it in.... (much to the annoyance of the customers behind me):(

I think the OP means pay for groceries with all the change at the self service tills inside ASDA, not CoinStar.

    No I don't. :)

I have over £100 in coins so it would be pretty stupid to use the self scan ;)

    I'd be there forever :D

You are saying HSBC are scamming people, which is pretty unlikely, just maybe something wrong with the machine.
  • Maybe Lokolo was too busy trying to 'seize the day' and didn't take the time to read the first post correctly. Perhaps the OP should have written their post in latin instead... ;)

Please can you identify where I am saying HSBC are scamming anyone I am simply saying the machines can not be relied upon to be 100% and is in some cases short changing customers (like a shop may). Being a MSE my shopping is always cheap and usually paid with loose change anyway. :)
  • Sorry to hijack your post, Andy, but I didn't realise that HSBC had such a facility. Is it a commission free machine (when it doesn't hide your money)? Does it pay out in cash or go straight into your bank account? I have an ever growing collection of coffee jars that I always mean to bank and give to charity, but I know banks are reluctant to help and I object to paying the commission in the supermarket machines.

Yes it's free and goes straight into an account. Not all branches have them there is a thread here:

Sorry it still does not state HSBC are scamming their customers, (I am ex-HSBC employee) but the point i am getting across is dont wander throw your money into the machine and think ah all well and done, that saves me counting it!!! Cos even machines make mistakes!!
