Good childcare

I have organised childcare for my kids for before school. Their school runs a breakfast club that will cost me £10 a week for both of them.

What I am having trouble organising is after school care. I would need it for just a couple of hours. There are clubs that do school collections and can look after the kids till 6.30 but it would cost me around £30 a day which is way too much.

I have contacted my local childminder coordinators and am waiting for a call back. Can anyone tell me what a rough rate would be for a childminder for 2 kids for an hour or two after school please. I suppose it varies depending on where you live a bit. We are on the South Coast.

Thanks for any advice

Hi, most of the childminders I've used in the past have had a minimum charge of 4hrs for before/after school sessions.

The last one cost me £15.60 per day for one child. This covered 2hrs before school, breakfast, school drop off and pick-up, 2hrs after school and evening meal. She also offered a reduced rate when there was more than one child from a family.

Does the school offer an after school club as well? I know that used to cost me £6 a day if the childminder was sick or on holiday.

We're in the North West now but when we lived in the South the daily rates weren't that much higher.

Some of the Teaching Assistants at my kids schools supplement their earnings by looking after children out of school hours in their own home. We used a part time student (studying to be a teacher) for ours, in our home. Both of these had the advantage of being able to do full days during school holidays which was great. I realise that isn't the exact question you asked, but might be an avenue to explore if the childminders are too expensive or can't do it. On costs, we paid £10 an hour but that was for 3 children, one with severe disabilities and based in Central London, so not comparable to your situation I'd have thought. HTH
