Joint tenancy - deposit protection

If a couple are on a joint tenancy and paid one deposit (in both names), is there any reason that the landlord would protect half the deposit in one name and the other half in the other persons name?

I would have thought it would be one deposit in both names but is there anything a tenant should be concerned about if it is done as mentioned above?

Is this with the DPS - the free custodial service?

If so, you can't have joint names registered for one deposit. You can have more than one name, but there will always be one lead tenant. They are the one who decide if they accept the deposit return, if they want to challenge it, & who get it back into their bank account.

Perhaps the landlord had trouble with the previous tenants disagreeing about the deposit return, or splitting up during the tenancy, & thought it easier to register half in each name?

Have you asked you landlord why they have registered it as two deposits?

    Yes, it is with DPS.

It is my brother who is the tenant and he asked me because I am a landlord myself however I couldn't see why they would split it, however your explanation does make sense. Thanks :)
