Thanks - we have applied for CA - How long before we hear from them ?
Do they generally carry out any assessments ?

I don't think they carry out any physical assessment, they check the DLA/other benefits/eligibility etc and then put it into payment. When my then husband applied I think it started about 5 weeks after applying.

When I rang the Carer's Allowance Unit (0845 6084321) they made it even broader, you don't even need to be with the person your caring for as it can also cover being available at the end of a phone.

Thanks for that info. I'm "on duty" 24/7 in that case!

My son has finished college and gone on JSA he was told that he could claim CA as well for me if he is doing things around the house for me.
I am on IS and DLA middle rate and mobility lower rate.
Would some of my money be affected or is it a completely different benefit?

No you shouldnt be getting the SDP if another person over 18 lives with you unless they also get DLA/AA?

Do you lose a big chunk of money when he became 18?

Its between £50 and £60 I believe (we dont get any means tested benefits so I cant give the correct figure?
