Washing machine broke on first use - statutory guarantee?

Hi all,
I've recently bought my first house with my wife, we bought a washing machine but didn't use it for the first time until last week, at which point it broke within 20 minutes of first use.
It was purchased 27th September 2010 (don't ask why we took such time in using it, long and dull story lol) but in the hustle and bustle of moving we didn't realise that this CDA washing machine required registering within 28 days of purchase to get a 5 year guarantee, therefore we don't have that.
I appreciate that was an error on our part, however my question is what rights do we have on this and who should we approach to sort this first? Father in law believes that all washing machines have a one year statutory guarantee, my own dad thinks that we should go straight to the manufacturer, mother thinks we should go to the supplier (who supplied our kitchen, washing machine, fridge etc.)
I've seen a relatively similar post on here suggesting that all washing machines come with a 6 month statutory guarantee from the seller (by my calculation we are one week inside the 6 months?), any advice much appreciated
Thanks

Washing machines don't have to have a one year guarantee, but in practice, most do. You should call the service department of the manufacturer or retailer (though in the latter case, it will probably pass you through to the manufacturer, as white goods always tend to be serviced by their makers, I've found) and arrange a repair.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

Remember your contract is with the supplier and they should be your first port of call. They may pass you onto the manufacturer, but your statutory rights only exist between you and the retailer.0
