Feline acne?

I was wondering if anyone had experience of cats with feline acne?
My 17 year old cat had some weird scabby/lumpy things on his chin I took him to the vet (2 weeks ago last Saturday) who diagnosed feline acne, he was given a course of antibiotics and a wash to use on his chin twice a day. The treatment is now over but looking at his chin tonight it looks as bad as it did to begin with.
I read that plastic food bowls can cause it but he only has stainless steel and porcelain.
I don't really like to keep dragging him off to the vets at his age as it just stresses him out and was wondering if anyone has had any luck at getting rid of feline acne? It doesn't seem to bother him but obviously I want to get rid of it if possible.
Thanks in advance.
