What's an acceptable amount of board??

Hi all

I went bankrupt today and completed my SOA based on my current living arrangement however I am due to move back home with my mum on the 26th March and my OR interview is on the 31st March.

I currently pay £500 rent plus bills and food at my current house but my mum was just going to charge me a set amount of "board" inclusive of bills, not food. Will the OR have restrictions on how much I can pay - I haven't come to an agreement with my mum but we discussed £400 - £500 / month. (for me and my son) does this seem unreasonable and what will the OR need to see - a rent book or dd from mine to my mums account?

Thanks

    Hi

As there are two of you I would say £90 a week and buying your own food would be quite acceptable

there is no set rule but most OR's would look at how many adults there are in the house, so if just you and your mum then they would allow half rent/mortgage, half of all the bills and then food etc for you and son,

If moving in with mum and dad then they would probably allow 1/3 of rent bills etc

but as i said no hard and fast rule

£300 a month seems reasonable to me, £75 a week for food, your bit of electric, water, gas should well cover your mums extra expenses.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • Thanks everyone - the reason why I ask is my mums mortgage is only £500 but she will be losing her WTC and single person discount on her council tax so and I don want her to be in a worse position from me moving in (although my ds is going through the terrible twos at the moment so she will definitely getting more headaches :))

    Would you put it as

    Board / Rent - £400

    Or

    Rent - £300
    Council Tax - £50 (1/2)
    Gas - £25 (1/2)
    Electricity - £25 (1/2)
    Water - £17.50 (1/2)
    TV License - £6 (1/2)

    Total - £423.50

    Thanks

That sounds quite fair I just simplified by saying about £90 a week including bills minus food.

It might be worth looking to see what the LHA figure is for your area (https://lha-direct.voa.gov.uk/Secure/Default.aspx).

Whilst you wouldn't be eligible for housing benefits, which is what these figures are used for, because you're living with your mum, it would give you an indication as to the going rental price for someone in your situation.
