So I've only lost a day's interest on the money in the end, and should be getting my new debit card, £5 and high interest on my ISA in the near future :D

It's really not that well hidden in the T&Cs ....... that you have to pay £100 into the account in order to initiate the Debit Card etc before you start adding other credits. And it is that £100 which needs to stay in the account for 24hrs (and has the tendency to go AWOL for a short while).

Yep, I found it in the T & Cs earlier today - I thought it must be in there somewhere, and as you say, it's clearly stated in the leaflet (which I found online). If I'd opened the account in branch, I'd probably have been aware beforehand (as I'd have read the leaflet then), and only put £100 in, in the first place. But as I opened it online, I was waiting until I got the paperwork by post to look through it all in detail. I assumed that most of the terms would be similar to my other 3 current accounts, and as I don't intend to use an overdraft, SOs or DDs and will be regularly funding the account, most won't be relevant to me, so I only skimmed through before applying.

I only realised I had to pay money in before receiving the card (and presumably the paperwork, since I haven't had that yet) because when I took my ID into the branch, the woman who checked it mentioned it. The last two current accounts I opened didn't require any funding to activate them. Never mind, all's well that ends well, and I'll know to look for this kind of term in the future.
