Intel T4500 or P6000? Only £15 difference.

I'm looking at two Acer Aspire laptops - all I have is the spec on the website, which I don't entirely understand - the T4500 (£350) is 2.3 GHz, 800 MHz FSB, and the P6000 (£365) is 1.86 GHz, 3MB L3 cache. Both are 3GB RAM and 320GB Hardrive, all other specs are the same.
Which is the better processor for me - I don't game, but I do surf a lot, run family tree software (very large databases), and store a lot of photos, home movies and music. This will also be used by the kids for homework etc.
Is there no real difference, or is £15 a good deal for a significantly better processor?

The P6000 is from a newer generation of processors but I'm not sure how much the advantage of the better architecture will make up for the lower speed. Assuming they're both using Intel integrated graphics, the newer one will be a bit better in that respect but still not really up to playing games. On the whole there won't be a large difference in performance between these different models.
I'd expect the P6000 to use less power as it's manufactured using a newer process and integrates the graphics into the processor package itself reducing the number of chips required. Whether that will result in longer run-time depends if they put the same capacity battery in each model which may be difficult to find out...0 -
The P6000 is slightly slower in benchmarks, but as AHAR pointed out is a newer generation with a better integrated graphics card. You'll be able to play movies better on the P6000 as it has HD support.
According to cpubenchmark.net (more is better)
P6000 - 1397 passmark
T4500 - 1569 passmark
Ordinarily I would go with the higher score, but the P6000 might be better overall. Either decision won't lead to regret though What price are you planning on paying btw, someone might be able to suggest something better for the same price?0 -
what's wrong with your desktop, and what happened to the fujitsu?!!

Thank you all So if i've read it correctly, it comes down to a potential energy saving, and better graphics on the P6000 against faster processing speeds on the T4500 - I think for how we use it, I may be tempted to go with the speed on this occassion.
Russ - these are both around the £350 mark, but there's no cash - it's tied to a catalogue account. If I was cash shopping, then it would mean second-hand and sub £150, and to go to someone reliable in this area, with some sort of warranty, I can't get much for that money - 1GB netbook at best.
Closed - I'm surprised you remember that far back I'm not sure what's wrong with the desktop - old age I think - it's over 6 years old, has less than half the RAM and Hard drive space of the laptops I'm looking at, and despite all the reboots/reinstalls and software scans and fixes I have tried, it still freezes, sticks, looses data and generally sulks - I'm amazed it's still running to be honest. I really want to get something else in place before it dies totally, rather than being without anything when the time comes, and something portable would be more useful than another desktop.
The Fujitsu lappy had died an unrepairable death over a year ago, and whilst I was looking to buy at the time, other expenses came up which meant we had to put buying a new one on hold - hence the hunt starting again.DFW Nerd no. 884 - Proud to [strike]be dealing with[/strike] have dealt with my debts0 -
