Multiply units by 11.5 for a Metric meter, and 32.5 for an Imperial meter gives an approximation of kWh.
The calorific value doesn't change a huge amount.0 -
Thought I would put above to the test using a bill from BG in March this year
BG converts 185 units to 5799 KWh
using the energylinx online calculator quoted above 5949
using last approx method 185 x 11.5 = 2070
both quite a difference - I prefer the BG way !0 -

It seems you have an imperial meter multiply by 1.02264*Calorific value (39)*2.83/3.6=5800 kwhs0 -

Yes, that is the calculation used by BG. I assumed it was metric as it is digitial and 9 years old but just checked it and it measures in cubic feet
Seems in the example I quoted above I did one as metric and the other imperial.
Either way using 32.5 x units or energylinx gives a higher estimate due to calorific value so best to check bills which should show the way supllier works it out0 -

If you have a vairiable(i.e. calorific value) in a calculation it is obviously best to use the method shown by the supplier to get the exact result.
The OP asked for a simple method and the 32.5/11.5, as stated, simply give an approx value and at the moment for your example it is 3.6% inaccurate.
Before they get their detailed bill most people simply want a rough idea of how much they have used.0
