kitchen extension or not ????

advice from people much appreciated.
we are in double minds whether to extend the kitchen or not.
Ours is 3mx2m, clearly in need of refurbishment.
Couple of kitchen fitters gave quotes, around £2000 (new units and a built in cooker).
Our biggest dilemma is whether to extend the kitchen ( to make it 5mx2m) as all the houses around us have been !
We are not sure how long we wil be living in this house for because of my job (we may live for another couple of yrs or might move within the next year).
the quotes for extending and fitting new units etc is around £9000.
obviously we need building regulations permission i guess (and not planning consent).
Is it going to make any difference to the value of the house in the future??:(

At £ 9,000 I would probably say it wouldn't make a difference to the resale value, but it would definitely make the house more attractive when you sell it.

Could you wait until your plans for the future are clarified and then make a decision ?
    Keep calm and carry on

I myself am not sure whether I will stay in the same house for next year or so.
our feeling is that if we are extending it, it makes more sense even if we stay there for couple of yrs. rather than extend it and then rent it ! aaarrrrrrghhhh
  • If you're going to move within the next two years, it's probably not worth extending. Planning permission and building warrants can take a LONG time so you might end up going to the expense of plans etc and then moving house before you get started with the extension.
