iplayer for HTC Wildfire

Options
Does anyone know of a program, or a workaround for getting bbc iplayer on an HTC Wildfire phone. I did use an app called beebplayer, which, until recently, played ok. Now, if I try to watch any of the recent programs, I get video error -2147483648. Live tv on the bbc is ok. I would also like to be able to watch 4OD, and SeeSaw, and TvCatchup if anyone has any ideas.

  • Official BBC iPlayer app is in the Android Market but only streams via wi-fi. Seesaw.com site plays in the stock HTC browser (it did on my Desire) though again, wi-fi recommended as it's a bit stuttery streamed on 3G.

    Haven't tried TVCatchup.

The iPlayer app is unfortunately not available for the HTC Wildfire. From searching around it appears this may be to do with the lower-spec processor in this phone (ARM6 rather than ARM7) and that Adobe's Flash is therefore a cut-down version that won't handle streaming.

A previous version of myplayer used to act as a very capable alternative to iPlayer, but it was taken down by the BBC legal team and the current version now no longer has any iPlayer capabilities. I understand, but couldn't possibly confirm, that there may be copies of the older version floating around "out there". Good luck, if you want to try searching. Or read the comments attached to the myplayer app itself for some other hints and suggestions.

So no catch-up BBC radio listening either then?

As roamia says the wildfire does not support flash at the moment due to it's ARMv6 processor (It's only 528MHz bless it!)

Your only hope is that the next release of flash player will support ARMv6 but it isn't looking likely at this stage. How long until your next upgrade?

No reason why you can't catchup on radio podcasts. It isn't BBC Iplayer specifically that isn't supported, it is the fact that Iplayer works on the adobe flash player framework and as the 528MHz ARMv6 processor won't support flash it can't work.

Radio podcasts by any other means (mp3 for example) will work just fine.

I use the mobile version of TVCatchup on my Wildfire - think it's at https://www.m.tvcatchup.com Needs a good signal though but there is the option to play in low quality

Thank you for the link to tvcatchup.com. However, it doesn't work for me, even on WiFi:

    - The standard quality stream gives me a white box with a yellow ! triangle (like the icon against this message)
    - The low quality stream does nothing at all (specifically, clicking any of the channel icons, e.g. "BBC One" does nothing)

Is it working for anyone else with a Wildfire?

On the iPod Touch BBC has an iPlayer site that works perfectly - it does not need Flash - I use it mainly for catch-up radio (programmes not available on the Podcast list). So this simple and convenient option would not be available if I bought a Wildfire S (or any lower powered Android phone)?

Standard browser supplied on the HTC Wildfire.

Please note that this thread is pretty much irrelevant unless you're using a Wildfire - the other (higher powered) Androids can all use the iPlayer app anyway.
