Tesco Data Protection complaint and warning

When at my local Tesco (Martlesham) to collect a Tesco direct order, I came across a pile of customer orders (including customer names and phone numbers, postcodes, what they had ordered etc) sitting on the collection desk unattended. When a member of staff eventually turned up we complained and asked if this was normal procedure - we were told this information was usually kept in a drawer. We returned the next day and came across the exact same situation!:mad:

We have complained to Tesco customer services as this is careless disreguard for customer's privacy. We have yet to recieve a reply but will give them a fair chance to set this right before escalating the complaint. If you find the same at your local branch when collecting orders, then I urge you to complain too! Afterall, next time it could be your personal data on display for the world to see!

    Thats actually for TV licensing reasons- your name and address is taken whenever buying a TV wherever it is bought. Not sure about age though...

    But the requirement is for a dealer who sells or rents a TV or TV decoder to take details of the customer.
    Widelats was only buying a TV aerial, so there was no need for any details to be asked for.

    Just a quick update;

    To Tesco's credit, they personally called me in response to my email to apologise and to say that action will be taken. The man was very nice and said he would be speaking directly to the store manager and staff members concerned to ensure this doesn't happen again. I will, of course, be checking! :P

    But for now I am a pacified customer, although I would be interested to see if this is common practice in other stores, so keep your eyes open and let Tesco know if you see anything! I guess head office can't correct these things if they aren't "officially" aware that they are happening.

    Probably an over-zealous training thing, if a place is fined they're likely to go OTT on the rules in order to avoid it again which i suspect was in play there.
    Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.

    They phoned you to deal with your complaint so they could do so without leaving a paper trail.

    They wouldn't want to acknowledge in writing that they were leaving customer details out for all to see.

    I see what you're saying but just wanted to point out that if they had written back, they would have been slated as sending a generic response that was probably generated by a robot and not bothering to contact the OP personally :D

    A written response to a complaint is normal really.

    But in this case Tesco are clearly sweeping the incident under the carpet.
