they are saying a cow "near" the plant....but 70km isn't near!

this is level 7 now surely?

and this is a cow that has only been grazing for 3 weeks. the concentrations are only going to get higher.

Well, to be fair, they say that the levels in the cow are only slightly above the allowed. I'm still not convinced it is level 7 as I'm still not convinced this is anywhere as bad as Chernobyl, though I do think the early comparisons with Three Mile Island are well in the rear view mirror and disappearing fast.

Nevertheless an interesting article ninky. The bit I found most interesting was Sarkozy's view that nations should work together to have a binding set of nuclear standards (they have standards, but they are not binding). I think that will be the good that comes out of this. It is also reassuring to read that researchers looking at Chernobyl could not find an increase in cancers linked to caesium.

The truth will not be known for a few years yet.

When we see how many have cancer and the death toll from the nuclear fallout then we will see,

I should imagine the level in the cow is about the same as the level in a human. And if it isnt because the human stays inside most of the time it certainly will be after a few more trips to the shop & drinks from the tap ;)

it's not just human deaths, it's environmental contamination and deaths of / damage to non human species also.

What nuclear fallout? Did someone set off a bomb too?

no. meltdown and contamination of the water table is actually potentially more dangerous than fallout. with chernobyl it was a big bang and an explosion but that stopped the reaction. with fukushima the fission reaction is melting down into the earth causing contamination of ground water which will contaminate the food chain. this is more deadly and harder contamination to contain.

Perhaps things won't be quite as bad as some of the more excitable posters seem to think.
