Redundant/Spouse self employed - what can we claim?

My husband has been made redundant - going to sort out what he can claim today. I am self employed and work on project as and when they arise (this was just as extra income to my husbands salary)- earnings expected to be no more than £3k/year - my question is if I declare myself unemployed and put myself back on the job market are we entitled to claim any extra benefits - either short/long term? I am already looking for extra work so its not a case of defrauding the system - more that we are actually entitled to more - we just need to declare ourselves a bt differently.

My other question is - if I stop being self employed - then get a piece of work in - do I have to keep chop and changing between unemployed and self employed - all rather complicated!

Thanks for any advice.
