Right click on the drive containing the CD-RW, select "Open" from the context menu, then click on "Erase this CD-RW" that is in the writing tasks pane.
Still don't understand this, as in my OP it says;-
"You can still copy new files to this writable CD which will replace files already on the disc".
There is no option to "Erase this CD-RW" anywhere, what I can do is copy the files I want to give then copy them to another CD, that appears to be the way to go, thanks.

A re-writable cd is not the same as another drive. You can read from a CD with windows, but you must use CD burning software (Nero, Imgburn Roxio etc) to write files to the CD.
With the burning software, your options are:
Erase the whole CD
Copy files to the CD (write-only)
Or with some burning software you can delete files in the CD but to do this the CD must not be finalised and it's not secure. The original data is still there, all that happens is the CD structure is changed to ignore the data. This data is recoverable by programs like isobuster.
As others have said, your best option is just to burn a new CD-R as they are much cheaper than CD-RW

I do have Nero, but have very rarely used it, I am pretty confident that I wrote to this and most of my other CD's using whatever Windows XP has on the computer.

Why don't you copy all the files to pc, use Ashampoo to format the disc then burn only the files you want. My xp won't erase or format rw's for some reason.0

In my opinion, it may be worth learning to use Nero as the built-in windows CD handling software isn't as versatile.
However if you want to use XP, you can easily erase the CD-RW and burn the files to the blank disc.
As others have said, don't forget to copy the files from the CD to your hard disc first.:)

Thanks, does that mean I will be able to erase files from the rewritable CD's using Nero?
I have clicked on your link and followed the instructions, but as I said in my post #12, there is no , "click Erase this CD-RW" in the CD Writing Tasks pane.
The only action in that pane is,"write these files to CD"

I've just tried the XP method in my previous post to erase a CD-RW and I had the same problems - I didn't even get a CD writing tasks pane. Sorry about the duff info.
Yes, you can do it on Nero, here's a you tube video on how to do it. It's for a DVD but it's the same routine as a CD-RW

there should be an option to FORMAT the disk -not too sure where abouts as I've not used nero in years (got too big, and my OEM copy didn't work with my OS)Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0

Thanks for that, will try later. does it mean I can only use Nero to delete/erase using a disc written on by Nero, or will it do so on a disc written by XP?
