Insulating between a garage and a bedroom above it

Can anyone give me advice on how to insulate between a garage and a bedroom above it?

I am looking for the easiest method of doing this as I am not great at DIY and to be honest don't have a lot of money to spend on this.

The bedroom is directly above the garage and the floor is always so cold and the room itself is far colder than any of the other rooms in the house.

I was thinking of putting some loft insulation space boards under the bedroom floorboards - would this be okay? Eg. (http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav.jsp?action=detail&fh_secondid=10647762&fh_view_size=12&fh_eds=%3f&fh_location=%2f%2fcatal!!!1%2fen_GB%2fcategories%3c%7b9372016%7d%2fcategories%3c%7b9372050%7d%2fcategories%3c%7b9372230%7d&fh_refview=lister&isSearch=false)

Thanks in advance for any help, it's greatly appreciated.

  • Hi there,

Insulating the floor probably won't help keep the bedroom warm, it'll just stop whatever heat that might be in the garage below rising up to the bedroom.

I take it the bedroom has its own radiator? If so you should look at insulating the walls and/or ceiling/roof of the bedroom to contain the heat.

    Good luck! :)

its not the best thing to use and its not really thick enough.
use normal loft insulation, the thickest you can fit into the space.

    ps
you might find it easier to insert from underneath. ie the garage ceiling.
    Get some gorm.

    Thanks for the replies.

I wasn't sure about insulating the garage ceiling as I thought their might be fire risks being so close to the light.

I know that heat rises, but I thought with the garage below having a slight gap where the door pulls up, this would be allowing cold air to blow against the ceiling which may be passing upstairs to the room. Thats why I thought insulating between the two might be a possible solution.

It's much easier to insulate the ceiling of the garage than to try to insulate the bedroom floor. Plasterboard is much cheaper than chipboard flooring panels. but, if you put insulation in, then fibreglass is cheaper and easier than a solid material, fibreglass is also very fire resistant. In any event the first thing you need to do is to ensure that the bedroom heating is sufficient.
I gather, from the tone of your post, that you are not really thinking of removing the ceiling boards, but to insulate properly, you need to be thinking of precisely that.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

Only if the car is on fire surely, never known a warm garage

We lifted the floor in the bedroom to do this and it made a huge improvement. Our consumer unit and boiler are in the garage and there were gaps around the cables and pipes letting cold air in from the garage, so we sealed these too. We also sealed where the floor joists go into the wall, as there was quite a draught around there as well. As others have said, just fill the void with loft insulation, but leave a little space around any cables.
