owning bike and a car using one at a time.how to insure one only?
Hi
I own a car and thinking of buying a motor bike too, I dont really want to pay for 2 insruacnes at the same time, am happy to use motorbike for about 5 month during spring and summer. And use the car for the winter. Having said that there are about 1 or 2 days a month where I may need to have access to the car. Now the question is how do i insure them so im only pay for one ? because i rarely use both at the same time.. what are the cheapest options?
thanks

It's certainly technically possible but probably not worth it financially, and new rules mean vehicles will have to be insured at all times UNLESS you SORN them, even if you're not using them. Do you really want to SORN your bike? What if we get an early spring, or late autumn sunshine? Besides, you'd need both bike and car to be insured against theft.Long-haul Supporters DFW 120

Impressive that you can use both simultaneously at all!!!
Joking aside it's something that will interest me since I'll soon be doing my DAS and thinking of buying a bike.
I think the best thing is to explain the circumstances and your requirements to your insurance company and ask their advice.

Forgot - yes there are some dual policies - e.g. Carole Nash do one called 'Six Wheels' - I don't know if they're worthwhile but they do exist.
Another thing to consider is you generally only get a year's no-claims for each full year's insurance (there are some exceptions, e.g. ebike's 12-for-8) - so if you insure both bike and car for part of the year you will never build up no-claims.Long-haul Supporters DFW 120

Good point.
Not relevant to me at the moment since I've got max NCD...so I've nothing to lose, except whatever horrendous cancellation fee they choose to administer!

My husband keeps his bikes (yes plural!) insured all year round but SORNs them as soon as the tax discs run out and it's getting cold.
There doesn't seem to be a cost effective way of doing it to be honest.
Thankfully that's the one advantage of being a crusty! (his words not mine)
Once the sun starts to make an appearance he bits the bullet and buys tax discs. This usually works out between April and September (ish)
The car is insured and taxed all year.
I hate insurance as well.0 -

Probably need to talk to insurer and describe the situation.
If you claimed locked garage and the bike was stolen, then the insurer cold argue you hadn't stored the bike where you said you would.

You can claim a "locked compound" with some insurers, I know Carol Nash who I'm with do it as I keep my bike locked in my back garden over night and confirmed with the agent that this qualifies.I live in a 3 floor flat with shared garden in the back of our house, garden is attached to the block and has walls and locked door, walls are about 2meters in height, Can I claim that im parking my bike in a locked garage?
