Windows Live Mail

I've recently bought a new laptop with Windows 7, which means that I can no longer use Outlook Express; hence I've installed Windows Live Mail. I've set it up to access my TISCALI account, but when I click send/receive, more often than not it comes up with the "Please enter the username/password ..." box. If I hit return to use the password with which it has prompted me, or even if I manually re-enter the correct password, it keeps reprompting me until I press Cancel, upon which I receive an "invalid password" message.

I know the password it has is correct because often it does receive mail without prompting me for the user/password.

When it is playing silly beggers with receiving mail, it is possible to send mail of that's of relevance.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

  • Mozilla Thunderbird beats seven shades out of Live Mail if you're not averse to new software.

Try Firefox browser while you're at it.

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas.
But, if the white runs out, I'll drink the red.

'Window Live' enmeshes you even deeper into the Microsoft web. Bin it! Even uninstall it to remove all the other interactive components that come with it, if you know what you are doing. It will make many attempts to install the 'Bing' bar in your browser too.

Go with the Mozilla Thunderbird, as White Christmas says.

(Did a new laptop for my Sis in Law just after Christmas. Couldn't spare several hours teaching her to cope with Windows Live Mail etc, after her XP computer. Installed Thunderbird, and she was away as if nothing had changed.)

Hello -Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 and I'm happy with it for myself.

    Is it possiblet
to have a completely separate email account with a totally different name. I'm asking because a relative does not have a computer and I'd like to open an email account on my computer for her use. It would be a joint email address in that we would both be able to use it on my computer.

    Thank you

This link may help you to check your settings. Although the information is for Outlook Express, Live Mail is similar.

    Good luck

That will depend on whether your ISP will allow you to have more than one email address. eg Talk Talk allow me to have upto 5. If so, you will need to add a new email account through your ISP account then add that account into Outlook. Or, you could look at getting a Hotmail or gmail (google) account (both free) which would ensure your friends privacy, and also allow them to access their own mail if they do ever get a PC?

Most companies allow up to five addresses I believe, as indicated above.
Just create an email address for your friend. It means it will come to YOUR inbox though.

TIPS: I use a primary address for family and close friends, but I have a second address for all on-line work. i.e. My Amazon account, website registrations etc.

If my on-line address gets too widely known, I delete it, and create a new one. Means you have to change your registered email address with all outside sources, but your primary email doesn't change for family and friends, and they can always get through.
When sending mail from your primary address, ensure the return email address is for your on-line address in your settings.

DO NOT circulate emails to all your friends addresses, unless you know how to send "blind carbon copies" !!
If you don't send blind carbon copies, the email addresses of everyone you send the email to, will be revealed to everyone who receives a copy. Very bad practice, and can cause family rifts, or open them up to malicious emails.

Apologies to all more experienced computer users re. Bcc, but it doesn't seem to be widely know by newbies.
Recently received one from family member from a source within the NHS, that gave me the email addresses of every staff member and patient with a computer in the care of the Cancer Care Unit of one hospital, and colleagues and clients addresses in one section of Worcester Social Services.
