Most banks will let you change your PIN to whatever you like, so there's nothing to stop you both having the same PIN if you want, although I don't think it's advisable. It's against the terms and conditions of your account to let anybody else know your PIN so, in theory, you shouldn't actually know whether your partner has got the same PIN as you or not. Letting someone else use your card is also against the conditions of your bank account.

And if a retailer notices Mr X is using Mrs X's card, they are well within their rights to void the transaction.

How are they to know if Mr and Mrs X are still together, and even if they are, how are they to know who has given who permission etc...

That said, I know my wife's pins, and she knows mine (well, when she can remember - she has enough trouble remembering her own, hence why I know them) And we do allow cross usage of our cards when in need.

But if your married and its a joint account what is the problem with both parties having the same pin. We do - and if I've gone into town and forgotten my purse then I meet DH at his work and he'll give me his card. We're married, we trust each other and its the same account anyway.

Of course, it's a reasonable point, but the bank would reply that's why they give you a card each. Also, if there was ever an irrevocable breakdown of relations between the parties, then it would become very difficult to prove who had done any large spending before the a/c was frozen due to seperation proceedings.

I work in a call centre for a major bank and once had a call from quite an irate man in prison, who'd given his partner (not wife, so no shared surname) his card and his PIN, and she had forgotten the PIN, so went to complain to the branch, and ask for cash over the counter. The branch staff, not able to contact him or verify her story had confiscated and destroyed the card. It got very messy.

However with chip & pin the retailer doesn't normally get within 3 feet of the card so wouldn't find out. As far as I am aware there is no indication on screen of the card holder's name.
