Car Insurance Cancellation Rip Off!

Can anyone advise me?

I have been with Kwik Fit Insurance for the past few years and every year I seem to get a better quote than their renewal. My insurance was due on 10th January but as I was due to have a new mobility car delivered this month, I called to let them know that it would only be for a couple of months.

When I attempted to cancel my policy last week, I was told that the cancellation fee was £109!!!

Considering I have paid 2 installments of £42 for Jan and Feb as well as them charging me 16% for the pleasure of paying monthly.

It transpires that I was charged legal fees which I didn't need and because I hadn't cancelled in 2 weeks, I will be charged for the full year. I complained and after listening to my telephone conversation they reduced it to £72 which they want paying within 28 days or I will be in default. :(

Please tell me that there is somewhere that I can call about this.

Thanks

Barry

Their policy booklet says you can cancel at any time and 'your insurer will allow a proportionate refund of your premium' (ie: pro rata). It goes on to say that if you cancel after the first 14 days they will charge £50 or their commision whichever is greater. It says their commision varies but you would of been informed this amount.

So I don't understand how they can say if you cancel you will be charged the full year?

That probably isnt correct. That is more likely a combination of the cancellation fee and a pro rata calculation of the insurance premium to the next cancellation point. Plus, any addons are often not refundable.

To be fair, they have every right to charge you for paying monthly. Just like any credit arrangement.

Before you do any calling, its worth understanding what you are paying for. You seem to think its a cancellation charge but it will not be. So, you need to have the breakdown. Also, if you intend to complain, then its worth finding out what you are complaining about. Kwik Fit have a lot of faults but so far in your post you have indicated no wrong doing.
