Security/antivirus for Netbook ?

I have just bought a packard bell netbook from pc world 1gb memory & 250gb storage with atom 550 processor.
The salesman was trying to sell us "Trend" security pack as he told us that there is no specific free ones for netbooks. He said the normal freebies are too big for netbooks and will slow it down.
I currently use avira on my pc.
Is he just selling or is this correct.
Advice appreciated please.

There is no way Avast! will slow down a netbook with 1GB Ram And the Atom 550 processor. I have it on a really old, slow netbook and it doesn't affect it one bit. I can't recommend Avast! enough. It will do the job perfectly. :)

I bet he was trying to sell you the 'Maximum security' package......

Any of the freebie anti virus products will do ie Microsoft Security Essentials, Avast 6, AVG 2011 or Avira.

Try them all if necessary but not at the same time of course to see which one you prefer or which one you feel doesn't affect the netbook's performance.

I'd only recommend AVG if that is literally only AVG you want to run on the netbook, because you'll have a hard time running anything else.

Avira free has been running fine on my samsung nc10 for the last two years so I would suggest either Avira or Avast.

Not sure about AVG 2011 but after viewing the forums on ebay recently concening the malware/virus problems a lot of users who have had problems the majority of those users were using AVG.
