Do people re-cover 3 piece suites these days?

Our first one lasted 20+ years and was re-covered once. Our current suite is 17/18 year old and looking shabby but was a good quality when we bought it. Apart from it being a bit shabby it probably needs new fillings in the seat cushions.

So do you get it re-covered?

Or do I look at buying new?

BUT can I get a new one that will outlive me early 60's)?

Or are they made to last 5 years and get replaced when the room is redecorated?

As you have discovered, buying quality in the first place will give you a suite that can be re-upholstered. Therefore you need to buy the equivalent quality.

The retailers competing on price alone will not normally stock suites suitable for re-upholstering. If your present suite just needs recovering then I would go down that route. My suite (made by Derwent) is of that quality and to replace today would be around £3.5k. Recovering will be much less and will outlast a new suite at half the price by a long way and no doubt be and remain a lot more comfortable.

Our suite was around £5,000 when we were a lot better off!!!!!

I have no doubt it could be re-covered and excellent point that the cost of doing it would buy a suite that may only last for a shorter tiem than we need.

    Thanks for your input

My aunt had her quality sofa reupholstered for a lot less than the equivilant new one.

I'm thinling of doing the same as I can't find any new ones that I like and there seems to be such a limited range now unless you want leather!!

My mum had her 12 year old suite cushions restuffed (about £150 for a big 2 seater and a big 3 seater). It looks like a new sofa.

reupholstery will cost about 600 quid per sofa. min.
only decent quality sofas need apply.
so you can see why few peeps have it done these days.

even covers are not cheap nowadays. ie,, plumbs, 350 quid and upwards.

    A local upholsterer did it.

We have an old 3 piece suite which we have decided (based on the cost of reupholstery) to replace it with a leather one. It was a good quality leather one when we bought it and the timber frame is still excellent plus we have a recliner which is manual but still working fine.

Does anyone pay anything for these old suites, e.g. an upholstery company who may recover them to sell on ?
