Cheaper Cast Iron?

Hi all,

It's bonus time on the 25th so I'm thinking I might treat myself to a nice cast iron casserole pan. I would love a le creuset and could probably stretch to one but I would like to spend some cash on a couple of other things and furniture as I'm moving house!

So, my question is, can anyone recommend a good cheaper brand of cast iron? I have seen this one on Robert Dyas but I'm hesitant to buy anything like that until I know someone who can recommend them!

I guess the real question is, can I save some money and still get a decent casserole pot or do I need to splash the cash on a le creuset?

I've not had it long enough to tell if it will last but so far I'm very happy with my aldi cast iron pans - they have a large round one coming up for £25...

I do love my le cru and have had is for 20 years- but the enamel has chipped so they aren't bomb proof

I saw some in Sainsburys last week that looked very much like the LeCrueset ones. I can't remember what colours they had, but I think they were about £30. Might be worth a look on their website. :)

We've got some Tesco cast iron casseroles and a griddle pan - buy them when they are on special and they were around the £30 mark although the griddle was only £10! They are fine, I've had them a couple of years and whilst one has chipped on the lid handle, inside they are fine.

I also have a Procook shallow cast iron casserole and I love it, their service has been very good - the first one arrived with the handle having been knocked off in the post and they just switched it with no problem.

Ikea have a lovely range in dark blue - I don't have any of it though.

I'd love Le Creuset, I had some in a previous life but I'm happier being able to buy a number of different cheaper pots rather than just being able to have one Le Creuset.

Been eyeing up the Aldi one coming up soon myself so nice to hear they are ok. OH says I have too many pots and pans as it is lol.He can't get that each type does a different job lol.

Was thinking if I got this I could get rid of most of my enamel/pyrex/pot type ones to open up space in the cupboards.

Don't bother with Le Creuset! You're paying for the name and the pretty colours.

I have these two from Ikea: pan and pot. They used to be green and I got them for a third off as they were just bringing in these new (prettier!) blue ones. I'd pay full price for them if I had to, though. I treat them like crap and they are still perfect.
  • I got a couple of the Aldi ones before christmas(£25 and £30) - am very pleased with them. I do look after them, but use them every week both on the hob and in the oven. Another recommendation from me :-)

Another vote for Aldi. I have a large orange casserole from there, I think it cost around £20, and it's fantastic. Definitely the best thing for cooking risotto, by the way :D

I also have a smaller Rosemary Shrager branded one from Robert Dyas that I picked up for next to nothing. Probably nobody wanted because it's a yucky brown colour. It's also very good.

I read a review that the Tesco version had rated higher than Le Creuset.
  • I have a Tesco one as well, got it in the summer clearance marked down to under a tenner. It's brilliant. :D
