Packing - just how much stuff appears from nowhere?

So, I have spent around two weeks clearing out anything that I hadn't touched/used in the last decade. That amount of stuff that I Freecycled/eBay'd/thrown away would have filled up a small van.
That left me with stuff that is used most of the time so is useful to me. I buy two 'home moving kits' - each is enough for a 3/4 bed house.
Both kits have been used up from stuff in the living room!
Where does all this stuff come from? LOL.
I recommend overestimating the number of boxes and large bags that you'll need by 5-10 times.

Where does all this stuff come from?
"I'll keep that, it may come in useful one day"
"I won't get rid of it, still fits and plenty of wear"
"I won't get rid of it, bit tight and a bit frayed, but can be worn when painting/gardening/signing on etc"
"Yes I know we've got another 3 or 4, but they do break/wear out you know"
"I may be able to salvage some bits from it, so I won't throw it"
"Well if all the TVs break down we may want to play some of these 1970s/80s board games"
"I remember this from my parents/grandparents house and always liked it"
"It may be useful for the children when they get a place of their own"If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -
@ Lincroft, that is all sooooo true. Even the children one, and I don't have children!!0

My parents hoarding proved very useful when me and my boyfriend moved into our own flat.
Although after 6 months I seem to have accumlated so much i'm dreading when we moved out of our rented flat in June!

"That cost good money to buy"
"It was the rolls-royce of widgets in its day"
"They don't make them like this any more"
"It may not be fashionable but it's such good quality it would be a shame to throw it away"A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 -
'I'll definitely use it in the new house'
'I couldn't possibly throw that away, my mum/uncle/cat's mate gave me that'
'It won't take up that much space, I'll keep it in the loft'
'Oh I forgot I had this! Must keep it'
LOL, there are endless excuses for hoarding, and as ruthless as I try to be, I still convince myself to keep some stuff using a number of excuses mentioned so far in this thread!

I know it's unbelivable isn't it?!
I moved out 7 years ago with one car load full of stuff
When we bought out first house last year we had one transit van load and about 7 car fulls! We hadn't even bought most of our furniture yet!
I am now in the process of clearing out a load of my stuff, ebaying and charity shop. I never want to have to move so much rubbish to another house!0 -
I feel your pain. I moved a month ago after having lived at the last house for 18 months and have just discovered a pile of clothes I haven't seen for at least 3 years. How did that happen?! How did they get missed in the last house?
I've moved far too often and absolutely hate and dread it now. Last time I had just over a weeks notice of the move and had to pack up a 3-bed house on my own.I must go, I have lives to ruin and hearts to break
