gbbo thread starter

Went on the gbbo site to start a web page -
( have read good and bad reviews but I only want a simple site not taking money or orders just to advertise what I do)

All names I put in have a cross by them ( even gobbly gook ones) - but they are available to buy on for example nominate.

I thought you got the name/hosting/site builder all from GBBO ?:o

Do I buy the name first from somewhere else and then input it into GBBO to start the site ?

If so say I dont like the templates cos there is nothing suitable on GBBO am I stuck with them ?

Would I be best forgetting them even though it is free ( I was thinking of doing a .co. and .co.uk to be covered ) and getting name hosting from one other company ?
The more I read the more confused I get -( ive been reading stuff for days the gov site business link send you round in circles with no real help spent all day on that one !)
Any help please

GBBO use GoogleSites to "power" the sites which is pretty (ok, very!) cak.

Alot depends on what you want to do. Do you have budgets or do you just want to get a presence on site?

I personally buy all my domains through 123-reg.co.uk with 7.5% cashback via Quidco.

As I've been building websites for over 10 years I do them all myself.

  • Thanks STEVE for your reply the GBBO site is now working.
As you say very basic lay out but can add pictures and pages.
I havent really got much of a budget just wanted to try it out to advertise tutoring for kids and see how it goes.
Ive been on a load of sites over a few days now to get images to down load to my GBBO domain ( which I havent got as I came out as I didnt have and images !)
Loads on internet say free but when you go on they are -
    charging a monthly membership
there are only a few pics/images on them
a search engine redirecting you to more sites
Photos to down load as a jpeg ( no link to use on web) .
Can you recommend an easy site/s to use for
    images
    background
    buttons
that I can easily link to my GBBO domain.
    Any help much appreciated:beer:

I'm sorry, but I really don't understand what you're trying to do!

  • Thanks for replying - what I am trying to do is to use the GBBO site builder for my web site but I need to personalise it.
Struggling to add images, just wanted some basic pictures to add to the template they give you and to add a header with my business name.
Have found lots of sites claiming to have images for your web but they dont really say to to get them to yuor web page unless you pay for the image.

I really want a site thats easy to use to add the images to my web.
Something like a calculator for maths, writing for english and a certificate for 11plus - and a couple of kids dotted round looking really happy to be studying.
Hope that makes more sense !

If you want a calculator on the site, then that's not going to happen with GBBO as you don't have any access into the backend of the server.

Alot of images will be subject to copyright so you can't just pick an image and put it on your website.

    I'll PM you.

  • Best advice to anyone considering a website is to use a proper hosting company! After I registered and setup the domain I was unable to modify the site using Google Sites. I also had constant phone calls from a sales person offering to build a site for £150 and more. There are lots of good ISPs out there with low cost packages - I used Host Papa, cost ~£75 for 3 years hosting, and they have lots of free tools and excellent support. Money and time well spent.
