help needed! getting data from old laptop hdd

hi there any help would be helpful, i have took an hdd out of an old laptop an want to access the data on it , i have put this in to a 2.5 usb hard drive enclosure and pluged it into my netbook which uns on windows xp so it says it would recognize this automatically but when i go into START, MY COMPUTER , then click on local disk(E: it comes up with a small box that says E:\ is not accessible, in correct function, can anybody help me from here to access this data please ,
