Damn you Renault handbrake

My patience is wearing thin with my missus' 03 Megane at the moment, it's having no end of problems but luckily I managed to fix the latest installment of fun today - always happens on a weekend just to annoy me!

Dropped the missus and the kids off at the mother-in-laws in her car and had the dog in it ready to go walkies but when I got back in the car the handbrake button lodged itself inside the handle disabling the car. Asked MIL for a screwdriver to see if I could free it, decided to take off part of the centre console trim and ended up making a nice big hole in my thumb and bled all over the centre console :mad:.

Back to the MIL's house again for a plaster to stem the flow and to the next door neighbour's to ask for a small pair of pliars, but in the end I managed to release the handbrake with the screwdriver and didn't use the handbrake again until after walking the dog.

Anyway, managed to google a similar problem and found out how to gain access to the handle which contained the release mechanism, not quite straightforward as I'd have liked but I managed to find the problem. It was the mount for the screws which wasn't fixing the plastic handle mechanism to the actual handbrake body (making it really loose), the top parts had snapped off from the original plastic part and so I managed to find some longer screws to reach the remaining part of the mounts to make the handle nice and tight with the handbrake body again. After applying some ever wonderful Vaseline on the button shaft - job done, seems good so far.

Renault wanted £250 for a whole new handbrake, not including fitting (would have done it myself anyway) or the local breakers wanted about £40 so I ain't done too bad really for no expense.

Is this the biggest money saving repair of the weekend you reckon?
