Baby weaning

Hi looking for some advice on weaning

DS is 6 months old and i started trying him with spoon feeds 4 weeks ago. The problem is we have no routine whatsoever with his feeds. i really havent a clue what i should be feeding him and when.

He currently has 5 bottles of formula (8oz) a day at 8am, 11 am, 2pm, 5pm, and 8pm (roughly these times)

i was wondering if anyone had any guidelines of how much spoon feeds to give and when? we are all over the place atm :( sometimes he will take a full jar of baby food then others he just refuses completely!

  • If you have a surestart centre near you they run weaning groups on a monthly basis, free and usually provide you with a cheap hand blender to help you prepare homemade healthy baby food:) They're also great for advice and information

I started mine having food as my dinner was cooking.. purely so they were full and quiet so I could eat in peace.

    Second we introduced breakfast

    and last we introduced lunch.

For some of them we added supper.. but they were very poor eaters or suffered with reflux or just ate bird portions.

We did food first and offered milk feed afterwards.. replacing that with water/juice when hey were taking around 200g of food (about a baby jar sized portion)

At 6 months most of his nutrition should still be coming from milk, and the purpose of weaning is to get him used to new tastes and textures so you don't need to worry how much of the food he's eating. I would start off with one meal a day for a week, then increase to two for a week or ten days, then three and add in snacks when you think he's interested.

Think about mushing up home cooked foods (without salt) as these ar cheaper and better for him, and maybe look on the net for some advice about baby led weaning which is basically giving the baby family meals from the off. Lots of people do this, or a combination of this and pureed food and it works well. Don't get too stressed if he isn't all that interested in solids yet as he's still very young, and don't drop any milk feeds until weaning is well established.

If you have specific concerns or queries, talk to your health visitor or drop in to a children's centre and see if they have any workshops coming up.
