cats and windows

Hi Guys

I was wondering if anyone can recommend how I can have my upstairs windows open without the fear of Our 8 month old Kitten getting out? Everytime I have tried to open a window she gets on the frame - causing me great headaches! Any help would be appreciated x kj x

There are cat window nets that you can buy. google them. You can get ones you screw onto the frame or theres removable ones that velcro on and off

    hope that helps

This is what I've done, only cost me a couple quid in thin chain & screws.

Buy some thin brass chain from a ironmongers & some 1/2 in self tapping screws, open the window to the point where you think it's a safe distance open & puss can't squeeze thru.Measure & add 1 inch to allow for the screw.
Remove one of the screws for the window handle & replace with a self tapping screw, passing the screw thru one of the links. Then screw the other end to the window frame.
The photo should make it clearer,I removed the stick on screw cover to illustrate it better.

Great that you are looking at this problem - my vet recently told me that when she worked in London the biggest number of cases in summer was cats fallen from windows.

If you have a bit of cash you could think about plantation shutters. I had these put in a few years ago - my house gets reeeeeeally hot in summer so they have been amazing. They keep my house cool and the cats safely indoors at night (they are allowed out in the daytime via catflap). And they look gorgeous.
Shop around and buy direct from a manufacturer if you can.

I used this company - found them at the Ideal Home Show - it was a few years ago now but I was really pleased with their service and shutters - no I'm not on commission, LOL!

There are loads of other companies that do them now.

They also keep my bedroom warmer in winter. I can't rave about them enough, so pleased with them.
Less stuff, more life, love, laughter and cats!
Even if I'm on the shopping threads, it doesn't mean I'm buying! Sometimes it's good to just look and then hit the CLOSE button!

I love the plantation shutters but for a cheaper option ordinary venetian blinds would work too... I have the wooden ones and my cat sits on the sill with the windows open but she couldn't get out they are too heavy for her to lift with her head which is what she used to do before we got rid of all the nets..

Some years ago I had a room where the window would open about 2", then it was prevented from opening further until I pressed a catch. That was brilliant as it meant I could leave the window open safely as it couldn't be opened further from outside.

I can't find anything on google at the moment.

For £3 if you've wooden windows, there's this:

I think they do a uPVC one too.

I'll stop now, getting a bit OCD.... but it's something I'd like to have when I next own some windows :)

I pulled the roller blind down and wedged it under the furniture as a short-term fix... had a three legged escape artist cat that regularly jumped out of the window, into an enclosed back yard where she couldn't get out of, then would miaow blue murder for me to go round and liberate her... at which point the stupid cat would do it again.

  • I think this might have come up on here before, if not it was another forum I was on which recommended these:

I don't have any myself as realised the windows not high enough to use them but thought they might be worth a look.
