And now you have to beg the English to force Scotland into independence...
Wow, what a sense of national pride Scottish nationalists have... begging English people to force Scotland to have independence, because the Scots don't want it.
Making a point to those of you who constantly pounce on any Scots based topic to whinge on about subsidies (did you read the link I posted btw? England does NOT subsidise Scotland to the extent the English are led to believe...) does not mean I am `begging`, so twist it all you wish, but the fact remains, we aren`t still under Westminster`s rule by choice, so quit moaning about us, or better still, get Home Rule for England....

Presumably then there's already some process in place that determines whether someone's subject to the Scottish government or not. It's not as if he has to create a new definition of 'Scottish' for this one policy (Scottish students are already exempt from fees so it's not even something new he's come up with, he's just extending what's already there).
There may, for all I know, be "some process in place that determines whether someone's subject to the Scottish government or not".....
Will you please try and understand that Salmond is reported as saying he will give free education for "Scottish" people. I am saying that (a) there is no definition in place to determine, unequivocably, whether or not someone is "Scottish". And (b) If there were, then he would fall foul of Race Relations, and other European Legislation to prevent such discrimination based purely upon RACE.
Yes, he can try and do it on Residency. Maybe he can do it on physical place of birth. Yes, he may take Residence or Birth Place of parents into account. Perhaps he can try to follow the same rules as the Scottish Football Association might have in place to play football, legally, for Scotland. These are a set of 'rules' which determine the degree of attachment one has with Scotland but it does not define who is "Scottish" and who is "Not Scottish".
Just as an exercise, please go away and determine (a) the practicality, and (b) the legality, if our Government tried to make the Health Service free only to ENGLISH people.
The minute someone could convince me this is possible, is the minute I will believe that Salmond can make education free only for "Scottish" people.0 -
I think it is outrageous that EU students get free tuition in Scotland and our kids don't. If our youngest decides to do medicine I am seriously thinking about buying a flat in Edinburgh, letting it out to students for the requisite time period and then letting my son live there and apply for funding from there.0

The scots can have a referendum on whether to leave the UK any time they consider it important enough to vote for. Apparently, according to Gas Powered Toothbrush, it isn't very important to Scottish people.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

Gas Powered Toothbrush doesn`t speak for the entire Scots population.

Of course, it might stand a chance of success if the entire population of English incomers, who funnily enough find Scotland a nice enough place to settle down in, thought of voting for Independance instead of keeping the Union."Ignore the eejits...it saves your blood pressure and drives `em nuts!"

No, he's merely pledging to continue the current situation of education being free for anyone who has resided in Scotland for the last 3 years.
It's already the case. Residents of Scotland get free Uni.
No changes are being proposed.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

I think there's a big misconception here with what I said.
Yes, we all know that Scotland offers 'free' universities for Europeans. [Let's not be pedantic by saying that because the Scottish are Europeans, then by definition he is offering free education to Scottish people. Let's interpret it as 'only' Scottish.]
But what we have here, I think, is an attempt to make it free for 'Scottish' people. Isn't that what your OP said? And so I come back to my position and say "Balderdash....."
..............
Think again Mr Salmond!
They already offer free places to "Scottish people"
What Salmond has said is that he intends to continue with the status quo0 -
The reason there are no net subsidises from England to Scotland isn't because of the dynamism of the Scottish economy, it's because of that wonderful black oil in the North Sea. Good luck with the independence pipe dream in twenty years when it's gone...0

University education is free for EU citizens in Austria no residence period needed.
Why not send him there?0 -
Treliac, the real question isn't why Scotland doesn't charge uni fees, it is why the rest of the UK does.Retail is the only therapy that works0
