Scotland gets roughly 20% more per head to spend than England, and while some of this is justified
Given how much of our oil you've taken, I'd say all of it is justified, and it doesn't go far enough.

Can you explain then blueboy43 (genuine question rather than challenge) why people in Eastern England receive £6,144 funding in 2007 compared to the wealthier S East's £6,304 or N East's £8,177 or London's £8,404? I know the figures are much more for Wales, NI and Scotland, but don't understand the regional variances. If they are on the basis of deprivation, the S E scores better on most indices than the Eastern Region. Figures are from Wikipedia, quoting Public Expenditure Statistical Analyses (PESA) 2007, chapter 9, table 9.2.

Not sure - but know its nothing to do with Barnett formula!

The figures you quote look correct through. Police is one area (perhaps less crime), social protection (less unemployment and pensioners ?), housing (you're going to fall into the sea so whats the point:)).

I hope not, I'm about 50 miles inland!

    Thanks for the answer though.

I don't understand why we - the English - don't get more annoyed about this. Whether it is free or reduced price university fees, prescription charges or parking at hospitals it always strikes me as fundamentally unfair that one part of the country gets these things and others don't. It isn't as though we have EMPs to vote it through. I don't have a problem with the Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish being entitled to something, just other parts of the country not getting the same. .

Plenty of English along the border are benefiting as well :)

They are dropping prescription charges from £3 to £0 too.

Water is also far far cheaper. It's in with council tax, which is also cheaper on average, so I'm told.

Not sure if there are things that are more expensive.

Mars bars are definitely more expensive because you have to include the cost of deep frying them ;)

Alex Salmond promises to keep university education free for Scottish students....

    Balderdash.

    He can't do it.

    How does he define 'Scottish'.

    1. Residents of Scotland (even though born in England)?
    2. People born in Scotland (but living in Wales)?
    3. People who's parents are 'Scottish' [but by what definition....]
    .......

And what do you think 'Race Relations' legislation will have to say? Not to mention the European Court of Human Rights, to which 199 submissions would be made the day after he did it!

    Let's be realistic!

Alex Salmond promises to keep university education free for Scottish students, during his speech at the SNP conference. Mr Salmond is also committed to a policy of no compulsory redundancies across the public sector.

Scotland already provides free personal care to the elderly and disabled.

How is Scotland able to afford this support to its people and to guarantee a level of provision and security that is not available to people in England?

It is presumably Scottish taxpayers who will be paying for all this, not English ones, yes? If they fund these benefits out of Scottish taxpayers' money, that's fine by me. But taxpayers in parts of the country that do not receive such benefits should certainly not contribute to them.

They already do. The criteria being resident in Scotland for at least the last 3 years.

They've been getting away with it so far..... and Wales is resisting the route we've taken in England.
In Scotland, students, if they attend a Scottish university, pay no fees at all although English students are charged tuition fees.

Health costs/charges are lower as well. The inequality goes on and on. I don't see the human rights brigade coming after them.
