Thanks Mikeyorks for the link which does explain what week one/month one means. I dont for the life of me understand why this code was applied, well, only that it was applied because HMRC asked for it to be applied, but they couldnt explain why they asked for it to be applied - so not much chance for me.
Thanks also chrismac1 for your continued on this - your info is always good.
Will write and complain and keep you updated.0 -

Don't you have a record of your 10/11 tax codes? What was the code in operation at the start of the year? What was in the code at the end.....what changed? Did the revised code show a potential underpayment?0 -

Obviously can't help. But Week / Month 1 is 'non cumulative' and is inevitably applied where there is potential of an erroneous repayment (someone switches jobs - but doesn't provide a P45.) Or where there is potential of a financially damaging deduction ....... such as a significant decrease in personal allowances towards the year end.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

I do have the codes stored away - will dig all the old tax papers out I dont recall it changing during that year and I'm sure I would have noticed the w1/m1 tagged onto the end of a new tax code, but I could be mistaken.
Mikeyorks, no job changes, no change in any other circumstances - apart from the original p800 for year 2007/2008 arriving in March 2011, when a new tax code arrived for 2011/2012 and then a reviewed tax code for 11/12 to recoup the underpayment for 2007/08, which I requested was not actioned until the investigation was completed.
I did ask HMRC when/why it had been applied, it seems there are no notes on my file to explain it, the lady said 'well it is so we dont take too much money in one month, but I dont know why we would have applied it because there is nothing on your file, other than a note of your letter in March 2011 and our reply to you in July 2011'.
I know that paying the right amount of tax is a personal responsibility, but I feel its like herding cats at the moment if the department who administers tax cant tell me why they did something how on earth do I know if it is right or wrong?
Really many thanks for the replies - you are far more helpful to my understanding and my sanity. Hugs x x x0 -
Received a P800 showing an underpayment of £952.40 for tax year 10/11.
My modest income for that year amounted to £4762.00.
Wondering how I could possibly owe tax on such a small amount I checked through the figures on the P800 notification and found that my personal allowance of £6475.00 for the year had been omitted and once it's included in the tax calculation would bring my "overpayment" to £0.00.
It makes me wonder once more if others have had a similar rogue P800 delivered through the post.0 -
There is good reason for the tagline which accompanies all of my posts on this site! More seriously, what really annoys me is the attitude of HMRC staff by post, in the person and by phone when dealing with many of these blunders. There is a cultural approach of "Blame someone else at all costs, move Heaven and Earth to do nothing at all" a lot of the time. So simple matters which can be sorted out in weeks with a "Can do" attitude end up taking months, maybe Complaint Cases or Tribunals and maybe compensation too.
It would be nice if all the jobsworth types were on strike next week and the "Can do" types were all at work!Hideous Muddles from Right Charlies0 -

It would be nice if some of the advice you gave on this forum was a) correct, and b) could be done without the incessant references to your claimed dealings with HMRC.
I deal with hundreds of accountants per week that get things wrong, but you don't see me going on about it on here.
Get a life !!!!!!.[SIZE=-1]To equate judgement and wisdom with occupation is at best . . . insulting.

You forget that everyone else is ALWAYS right and HMRC employees are ALWAYS wrong ! and with an attitude with that I despair !It would be nice if some of the advice you gave on this forum was a) correct, and b) could be done without the incessant references to your claimed dealings with HMRC.
